Caribbean Cool

In these freezing months, our dreams turn to tropical paradises like the Caribbean. And why just dream, when you can buy there surprisingly cheaply, asks Johnny Turner

The Caribbean is synonymous with relaxation, beautiful beaches and sunny luxury. No wonder Brits visit these lovely islands in their thousands. The turquoise seas and up market atmosphere are sure winners when it’s time to plan a holiday. And when it’s time to invest abroad, the same criteria apply. With the credit crunch in full swing, it makes even more sense to put your money where the popularity is.

Over in Antigua, in the middle of the Leeward Islands, in the Eastern Caribbean, clued-in tourists and buyers are seeing the destination of 2009. Chic and glamorous, the island is drenched in natural beauty, with endless powder white sands, hidden coves and protected coral reefs. There are 365 beaches, as well as great golfing, vibrant culture, excellent restaurants and nightlife and fascinating tours and excursions.
Improved flights and extensive foreign investment has given Antigua a property boom in recent years. Jeff Hadeed, developer of boutique residence hotel South Point, says, “The tourist market in Antigua is really taking off due to the stunning beaches, the fantastic weather and the wealth of activities on offer. In turn, this has fuelled demand from second home buyers and investors looking to purchase an island getaway, as prices here represent excellent value for money when compared to other places in the Caribbean.”
